KEY TERMS

    • Polar orbit

An orbit that passes over the north and south poles of a planet, compared to an equatorial orbit, which passes over the planet’s equator, or middle. Polar orbits are excellent for spacecraft on missions to map planets, because they cover all latitudes from one pole to the other on each orbit.
