WEBVTT 00:02.130 --> 00:05.220 I've been asked in to help with the gravity science experiment. 00:05.220 --> 00:08.190 Measuring Jupiter's gravity depends on measuring 00:09.130 --> 00:13.140 changes in the spacecraft velocities that goes around Jupiter. 00:13.140 --> 00:16.120 What we are looking is for variations in that acceleration rate 00:16.120 --> 00:19.150 that tells us something about the change in the gravitational field 00:19.150 --> 00:21.160 of Jupiter as it gets closer to the surface 00:21.160 --> 00:24.080 associated with the mass structure inside. 00:24.080 --> 00:28.040 And so what we're trying to do, then, is measure the spacecraft's velocity 00:28.040 --> 00:30.120 as a function of time very, very accurately. 00:30.120 --> 00:32.140 And we do that by 00.32.140 --> 00:35.180 measuring the Doppler shift of the radio signal. 00:35.180 --> 00:40.130 So if you've every heard a fire engine going by 00:40.130 --> 00:43.080 with its siren as it's approaching you it's high pitched (makes a high noise) 00:43.080 --> 00:45.060 and when it goes by it goes (makes a low noise) 00:45.060 --> 00:47.140 Right? That Doppler shift, that change in pitch 00:47.140 --> 00:50.130 tells you about the velocity of the fire engine relative to you. 00.50.130 --> 00:53.040 So the instrument that we use 00:53.040 --> 00:57.150 is sort of a combination of the listening on the ground to the radio signal 00:57.150 --> 01:00.080 and the radio signal transmitted by the spacecraft. 01:00.080 --> 01:02.080 So the biggest part of the instrument, of course 01:02.080 --> 01:05.110 is the 34-meter diameter radio antenna 01:05.110 --> 01:07.010 at Goldstone, California. 01:07.010 --> 01:09.200 Then on the spacecraft there's a high gain antenna 01:09.200 --> 01:10.210 that's pointed at the earth. 01:10.210 --> 01:14.000 So the radio instrument measures the voltage coming in 01:14.000 --> 01:15.230 from the antenna from the earth 01:15.230 --> 01:20.170 and then it transmits the voltage that goes fed out to the radio signal to send back to the earth. 01:20.170 --> 01:23.200 And then the gravity measurement tells us something about density variations 01:23.200 --> 01:27.050 which then can tell us something about whether there's storms on the outside 01:27.050 --> 01:28.230 or whether they penetrate all the way through, 01:28.230 --> 01:32.030 and whether there's some hint of a structure at the center 01:32.030 --> 01:34.120 other than just compressed gas of the hydrogen.
