How does an unmanned spacecraft interpret information?
Computing and Data Handling
The Juno “brain and central nervous system” is called the
C&DH, for Command and Data Handling subsystem. The C&DH controls the
functions of the spacecraft, collects and organizes the data from the science
instruments, checks on the health and safety of the spacecraft, and controls
the transmission of data back to Mission Control. Juno’s brains are powerful
enough to protect it from most malfunctions by putting the spacecraft into a
safe mode if engineering sensors identify an anomaly, and waiting for further
instruction from Earth. Amazingly, this computer is very simple – less powerful
than your typical laptop computer, and doesn’t use much power
