A heavily processed north polar projection map showing Jupiter's north polar region.

To reduce noise in the faintly lit polar areas, maps processed from images PJ39_10 and PJ39_12 were averaged. To show maximum amount of details, the intensity information was taken from the red channel only. The red channel shows far more details at high latitudes, it is less noisy than the green and blue channels and penetrates the atmosphere better. Because of this, the red channel was used to produce a contrast enhanced, sharpened grayscale image.

This enhanced grayscale image was then colorized with enhanced color from the original RGB map (the color is inaccurate near the terminator though). The result is a color image that combines all of the details visible in the enhanced red channel image with color information from all three channels (red, green and blue). This reveals lots of details in the faintly illuminated area near the north pole, including the entire central North Polar Cyclone (NPC). The central NPC is partially on Jupiter's night side but since it is close to the terminator it is faintly illuminated by scattered light.

Latitudes in the map are planetographic.
