Being a hobbyist woodworker as well as an amateur photographer I immediately saw a resemblance to the wild grain patterns of wood burls when I looked at all the swirls and eddies of the storm on Jupiter. Burls are often sliced into thin veneers and adjacent slices then "matched" to create beautiful symmetrical patterns. These matched veneer sheets are then adhered to an engineered wood (plywood, MDF) substrate and used as table tops or some other flat panel application. This image is simply a digital version of the same process, after one of the original raw images underwent some minor enhancement. Thank you NASA for making these images available for the public do this sort of thing!
